Connecting Land and community

Events & Education

OLT hosts community events, guided outings, and educational opportunities that help people connect more deeply with the land and with each other.

Through shared experiences in the field and in the community, we create space for learning, stewardship, and a stronger sense of place across the Okanogan.

Community Events

Program offerings can vary year to year, but our annual community event mainstays include:

  • Spring Forward: A celebration of the turning of the clocks in March and the coming of warmer weather. The event includes a silent auction, home cooking by OLT board, staff, and volunteers, and local libations.
  • Ponderosa Circle: Each summer we get together with our past, current, and (we hope) future core supporters to share our accomplishments of the prior year and our goals for the next.
  • Poetry Potluck: Local poets and musicians get together to share verse and song about the Okanogan.

Educational Programs

We provide a variety of educational opportunities, including lectures, presentations, and field trips:

  • OkaKnowledgy: Our annual speaker series, bringing renowned professors, authors, subject experts, and naturalists to our area for engaging and thought-provoking presentations. Subjects run the gamut from natural history, social and cultural history, wildlife, water resources, folk music… the sky is the limit! Due to increased support and funding for this program, we’ve added field trips to the series.

  • Oden Road Fire Study: In conjunction with Okanogan High School, the Okanogan Conservation District, and several other organizations, we co-host an annual field day where Okanogan High School science students monitor life’s recovery from the Oden Rd. Fire that scorched 10,000 acres in 2009   The survey is followed by a public presentation by the students of their findings.
  • Community Workshops: We routinely partner with other conservation organizations to put on workshops about water rights, conservation planning, etc.
